Q&A: SharkMedical OY, Finland
We spoke with SharkMedical, our partner in Finland, about their mission, the realities faced by first responders in the field, and why solutions like the °M Warmer System play a critical role in trauma care in demanding Nordic conditions.
Read on as their CEO, Topi Haikala, shares how it is not just about distribution but about responsibility.
What Drives You?
“At Sharkmedical, we are driven by one simple but powerful mission: improving survival in critical situations.
We work closely with first responders, military professionals and emergency services who operate in high-risk environments. Knowing that the products we provide can directly impact patient outcomes – especially in cases of trauma and hypothermia – is what motivates us every day.
For us, this is not just about distribution. It is about responsibility.”
Using Mequ was fast, reliable and easy to use. It allowed us to give warmed blood immediately when it mattered the most!
What qualities are most important to you when choosing solutions for first responders?
“When selecting solutions for first responders, we prioritise:
• Reliability under pressure
• Ease of use in extreme conditions
• Proven clinical effectiveness °
• Fast deployment and intuitive design
• Compliance with international standards
In emergency care, there is no room for compromise. Equipment must work immediately, regardless of weather, stress level or operational complexity.
That is why we partner with manufacturers who understand the real-life challenges of field operations.”
What inspired you to bring the °M Warmer System into your portfolio?
“Hypothermia remains one of the most underestimated but critical factors in trauma care, especially in Nordic conditions.
In Finland, cold exposure can rapidly worsen patient outcomes in both civilian and tactical environments. The °M Warmer System stood out because it offers:
• Controlled and effective active warming
• Portability suitable for field use
• Ease of integration into existing emergency protocols
It aligns perfectly with our commitment to providing evidence-based, life-saving solutions tailored for demanding environments. For us, °MEQU is the crown jewel in our portfolio.”
A rescue service team treated a severely bleeding trauma patient with a long transport time. Blood transfusion was started at the scene using the Mequ °M Warmer.
The device enabled immediate administration of warmed blood throughout the mission. The patient’s temperature remained stable, and the receiving trauma team reported no significant hypothermia on arrival.
Where is the °M Warmer making an impact in Finland?
“The °M Warmer is making a growing impact across:
• Emergency medical services (EMS)
• Rescue units
• Military and defence operations
• Tactical and field-based care environments
Especially in northern and winter conditions, active warming solutions are critical. We are seeing increasing awareness of the importance of early hypothermia prevention in trauma management.”
What feedback do you most often receive from customers using the °M Warmer System?
“The most common feedback highlights:
• Reliability and consistent performance
• Ease of setup in time-critical situations
• Practical design for field use
• Increased confidence in managing hypothermia risk
Customers appreciate that the system is built with operational realities in mind. It supports professionals when every minute matters.”
