Prehospital administration of blood products – Experiences from a Finnish HEMS

Civilian emergency medical services utilize prehospital blood products in Great Britain, Australia, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland and more. The collective conclusion from reports from these countries is that it is feasible and safe to deliver prehospital transfusions. Depending on the surrounding population, 1–8 patients per month are in need of prehospital transfusion by a HEMS unit. Prehospital Therapy with Blood Products – the “HeliBlut”-Project

A severe and critical hemorrhage is a major factor for morbidity and mortality of trauma patients. “Project HeliBlut” in the DRF Luftrettung, a German HEMS provider, facilitated the prehospital use of packed red blood cells and plasma and enabled better treatment for patients with critical bleeding. Prehospital transfusion is a major step to improve the prehospital treatment of bleeding patients. Moreover, it is safe and the use is in accordance with the German transfusion guidelines.

Effectiveness of warmed IV fluids to prevent hypothermia in caesarean birth

New updates were made on the NICE guideline for caesarean birth. The updates included a recommendation of the use of warmed IV fluids for all women having caesarean birth using a fluid warming device.
